Kizit-Mpunguti Marine National Park


The Kizit-Mpunguti Marin National Park is located near Shimoni, on the southern Kenyan coast, almost on the border with Tanzania . It is located on four small islands surrounded by coral reefs. Area Kizit-Mpunguti Marin - 11 square meters. km. It was founded in 1973 to protect picturesque islands and a large number of various marine animals and plants, including endemic ones. In the protected waters, a variety of fish are found in abundance: moray eels and perches, stingrays and gubans, parrot fish and butterfly fish, fugu, scorpion fish, various spinoraceous, stingrays - more than 250 fish species have been recorded. The reserve is also home to dolphins (there are constantly more than 200 "bottlenose dolphins", bottlenose dolphins), reef sharks, green sea turtles, etc. In the migration season, you can see whale sharks and humpback whales. There are also 56 species of coral.

Due to the small depth and amazing transparency of the water, the reserve is one of the most popular places in East Africa for diving enthusiasts. Here come both professionals and beginners to enjoy the amazingly rich underwater world. The most popular dive sites are the outer boundaries of coral reefs. They are indicated by mooring buoys.

How to get to the Kizit-Mpunguti Marine Park?

The park is open daily and around the clock. It is best to visit it in the period from July to December, because at this time you can observe whale sharks and whales, "walking" their whales in these warm waters.

You can get here from the coast only by boat. To do this, contact the keeper of the Kizit-Mpunguti National Park. The office is located 200 m from the main pier of Shimoni.
