On the territory of a modern city, founded in 1649, the first settlers appeared long ago. The reason for this was the fish, which was abundant in Saimaa. Today this lake is an excellent place for surfing.

The breakthrough in the history of the city's development was tar, that is, its sale. The great demand for this product led to the fact that Queen of Sweden Christina awarded Lappeenranta status of the city. For a long time the city was the subject of a dispute between Sweden and Russia, but already in the XIX century it turned into a tourist center.

Modern city

Today the center of Lappeenranta is the port, and on the peninsula, washed by Saim, there is the equally famous fortress of Lappeenranta, where numerous museums work. The most visited museums of Lappeenranta are the Volkhoff house museum, the Laura gallery, the Saimaa Canal Museum and the Aviation Museum of Karelia.
