How to insulate the attic?

At one time an attic space, in other words an attic , was used only as an additional space in the house where it was possible to equip an office or a room for a maid. Today, many people find a lot of ways how to turn this part of the house into a cozy, warm and bright room for use as a full-fledged living room.

However, this requires a little work, because the attic is formed directly under the roof slopes, and it is quite difficult and expensive to heat this room in winter or to cool it in the summer. Therefore, in order to avoid such troubles and expenses, you need to know how to insulate the attic, because it is quite simple and even inexperienced in the construction business for a person. Protect the attic space from cold or hot sun can be in various ways both outside the building and inside it.

In our master class we will tell you how to insulate the attic from the inside without the help of specialists on your own. First we will prepare the necessary tools:

Choosing a heater for the attic

As a heat insulator it is quite suitable: mineral wool, ecowool, glass wool, foam, foam, polystyrene, polyurethane and fiberboard. In our master class we will use environmentally friendly white mineral fiber, which looks very similar to cotton wool. Since we will insulate the attic floor from the inside, it is very important that the material used does not emit toxic substances, and the heat insulator chosen by us meets such requirements.

White mineral fiber is made by melting quartz sand, which adds a polymer acrylic binder. Such a heater for our attic is an excellent option, it is durable, fire-resistant, has a low coefficient of thermal conductivity, ensures vapor permeability, absolutely does not absorb moisture, does not stick and does not crumble during installation.

How to insulate the attic roof?

  1. Over the waterproofing film (previously attached to the rafters) we lay the heat insulator. Take a single-layer insulation for the roof of the attic thickness of 150 mm, measure the distance between the rafters, add another 10 mm and cut off the cutter from the roll of mineral fiber piece of the desired width - 63 cm.
  2. We lay a mineral fiber between the rafters. Due to the fact that the width of the piece is larger than the opening between the beams, it is kept tight enough.
  3. Now lay the vapor barrier film. Using a stapler, attach the vapor barrier to the rafters.

How to insulate walls in the attic?

  1. Between the rafters, on top of the waterproofing film we lay a heater - a mineral fiber in the form of plates 100 mm thick.
  2. We cover the wall with a vapor barrier film, which is also fastened with a stapler to the wooden logs.

How to insulate the floor in the attic?

  1. Mineral fiber sheets with a thickness of 150 mm are forgiven and refilled in the lagging holes over the waterproofing.
  2. We spread the waterproofing film on the floor and fasten it to the ladders with a stapler, this will help protect the heater against possible moisture penetration.
  3. We mount the rough floor. We take the chipboard, put it in the corner and then continue to fasten the plates one to the other with a tongue and groove joint.
  4. Self-tapping fix the cover in the places of passage of wooden lags with a step of 40-50 cm. Now that we have insulated the attic, we can proceed to its decoration.
