A holiday in Crete is an excellent option for holidays. It will suit both lovers of solitary travel, and romantic couples and families with children. In recent years, the tourist interest in small resort towns has increased significantly, allowing all the benefits of recreation without excessive pathos and fuss.
In this article we will talk about the rest in Crete in the town of Chersonissos: sights, features and interesting tourist routes of this resort.
What to see in Chersonissos?
Chersonissos is a small town with a small port. Despite the fact that Chersonissos is not the most advertised and replicated resort of Crete, tourists invariably go here again and again. Perhaps the secret of the popularity of this place is in the charm of simplicity, in the attractiveness of the seemingly carefree life of the locals and the beautiful seascapes opening out to the eye from the embankment and port.
In the city itself there are no outstanding monuments of culture, history and architecture, but there are several places near it that everyone should visit:
- a number of bays near the city - Limanakya Chersonissos. They start from the port of Chersonissos and extend westward to Cape Sarantaris. Each of the bays is beautiful in its own way. Separately it is worth noting the small church of St. George, which is located on the shore of the westernmost bay. The restrained and simple style of the building miraculously merges and complements the seascape of the bay, resulting in an incredibly beautiful sight.
- water park in Hersonissos. "Aqua Splash" is located on the road to Castelli. "Water City" is located near Kokkini Hani. Star Beach is located on the outskirts of Hersonissos. In each of them you will find a variety of water slides, mazes, swimming pools, attractions. Visiting the water parks will be very pleasant for children and amateurs of water entertainment;
- Ano Hersonissos (old Chersonissos) - a small village, located a couple of kilometers south of Chersonissos. Unlike New Chersonissos, full of beach lovers, this village retains its traditional appearance and lifestyle. In addition to immersing in the measured lifestyle of the village of the Greek north, in Old Chersonissos you can visit two churches - on the outskirts of the village and in its center, on the square. Both buildings are an example of a traditional Byzantine style and are worthy of being seen;
- local restaurants and bars. Do not miss the opportunity to join the local gastronomic culture. Go to several restaurants where traditional Greek food is served;
- horse center of Hersonissos. Here you will be offered a horse ride. It is recommended for everyone who wants to feel really free and to immerse themselves in nature as much as possible.

Chersonissos: Excursions
From Chersonissos, you can easily go on excursions to nearby towns. In particular, it is worth visiting Heraklion (just under 30km from Hersonissos), where you can not only admire the beautiful buildings and landscapes, but also do shopping. On the hill of Kefal, not far from Heraklion (5km) is the palace of Knossos. This is one of the oldest cultural monuments not only of Crete, but of all Greece. Of course, visitors are always more than enough.
Travelers with children are especially encouraged to visit the Grektakvarium. The diversity of fish, underwater animals and plants will not leave you and your children indifferent. Not far from Grektakvariuma there is a small railway. From the aquarium to Chersonissos and back about every hour a train with several trailers leaves.
