Museum of Tile


The Museum of Tile (Spanish Museo de Azulejo) is part of the large Uruguayan museum of Colonia del Sacramento . It is famous among tourists thanks to the magnificent collection of tiles and ceramics: the history of many exhibits lies in the depths of centuries.

Features of the museum

The museum is located in an ancient mansion built during the Portuguese colonization of the country and located in the southern part of the Colony. The whole exposition of the museum occupies 3 small rooms. The building was erected in the XVIII century. (the material of construction was chosen a large stone) and covered with original tiles of that era, which allows travelers to feel the spirit of the past before entering.

The museum de Azulejo accurately reproduced the interiors of the three hundred years ago. The antique tiles of the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly of Portuguese, French and Spanish origin, are under glass: they are forbidden to touch. "Zest" of the exposition is a set of old Uruguayan tiles from the 1840s. The number of exhibits is 3 thousand.

To visit the exhibition, it is enough to buy a general ticket to the city museum of Colonia del Sacramento, which will also be a pass to these halls.

The museum is open daily from 12:15 to 17:45, excluding Monday. In summer, work hours are prolonged because of the influx of foreign tourists.

How to get to the original museum?

The institution is waiting for its guests near the ocean coast, so you can reach it on the Paseo de San Gabriel on a personal or rented car.
