Old Town Square in Prague

In the XIII century, the townspeople called it the Old Market, and a century later - the Old Market. In the XVIII century, its name changed many times. The square was also called the Old Town Square, and the Great Old Town Square, and the Great Square. And only in 1895 the modern official name was assigned to it.

For its centuries-old history, this place had occasion to see both solemn coronation processions and large-scale tragedies. In the fifteenth century, armed clashes and loud executions took place on the square. In 1621, 27 soldiers were executed here, who were participants of the Stav resistance. Today in memory of them on the sidewalk near the town hall towers 27 crosses, decorated with swords and crowns. The monument to Jan Hus, which is set on the square, also reminds passers-by of a tragic event, for it was here that this famous Czech preacher was executed.
