Gagry - sightseeing

One of the most famous resorts of the Republic of Abkhazia is the city of Gagra, located near the airport in Adler and closest to the border. The infrastructure of tourism is very well developed here, but with Gagra this is the most expensive city in the country. Landscapes of this land are admired by visitors at any time of year, thanks to the fact that the mountains are closer to the sea than everywhere else, that's why the climate here is warmer.

In this article you will find out what sights you can see in Gagra, as well as what kinds of entertainment are available for holidaymakers.

The entire resort of Gagry is divided roughly into two parts:

Excursions in Gagra

Most of the territory in Old Gagra is the seaside park of the Prince of Oldenburg, founded in the early 20th century. On its territory are collected various ornamental plants: a candy tree, magnolias, palm trees of different species, cedars and others. Also there is a playground designed by Zurab Tsereteli, a monument of the 6th century - a serf temple and a museum of ancient weapons.

Also popular is the castle of the founder of the resort of Prince Oldenburg, built in the style of Art Nouveau. But recently it is worth being abandoned, so it looks depressing.

From the park it is very easy to get to two more attractions: the colonnade and the old restaurant "Hagripsh".

Great popularity among holidaymakers in Gagra enjoys the Zhoekvar Gorge, located on the west of the resort. Here you can get acquainted with the beauty of the nature of the Caucasus and historical sights: ancient trails and the tower of Marlinsky.

Very close to it is the fortress of Abaat and the Gagra temple built inside it. This fortress was built roughly in 4-5 centuries AD to protect the city from danger from the east. Despite its age, the fortress was kept in good condition.

Gorge Tsikhervy attracts tourists with the cave of St. Eupatius or Euphrates, the most famous in Gagra. It consists of two rooms, and its name was given by the name of a monk who lived in it at the end of the 19th century. From it goes the road leading to the waterfall and another cave with stalactites.

This gorge is the boundary between the two parts of the New and Old parts of Gagra.

Fans of eco-tourism will like Lake Ritsa , famous not only in Gagra, but throughout Abkhazia. You can get to it by driving along the road past the Bzip valley and the ancient village of the same name, famous for its water-cascading waterfall and honey.

Features of recreation in Gagra

Gagra is more suitable for recreation for young people and active lifestyle lovers, as there are an aqua park, youth clubs and discos, shops, restaurants and cafes. But you can find places for a relaxing holiday.

You can stay in various hotel complexes, boarding houses and hotels, the most comfortable of which in Gagra is the boarding house "Boxwood Grove", located near the Pitsunda relic grove.

The total length of the beach of this resort is 53 km. Since the whole city is divided into 2 parts, the beaches of each of them are different:

Almost all beaches are city-wide and unequipped, only with boarding houses there are equipped places for recreation.

Going to rest in Gagra, you first need to decide how you want to relax: calmly or actively, it will depend on which part of the resort you need to look for accommodation.
