Ray Kawakubo

Biography Ray Kawakubo

Rei Kawakubo is the founder of the famous brand Comme des Garcons, which means "like a boy". She was born in Tokyo in 1942. She did not have the opportunity to get a proper education as a designer, so all the details of this art were studied by the future fashion designer on their own. Rei could easily convey her ideas to designers and seamstresses. The latter could easily create models from her words and embody the plans.

A little later Ray Kawakubo was able to go on sewing courses. After their graduation, she worked in a textile company. Rei also tried herself as a stylist. However, in 1969 she created her own brand of clothing - Comme des Garcons, which corresponded to the name of one of her favorite songs. Comme des Garcons Co. Ltd., which was founded in 1973, specialized in the production of women's clothing. But already in 1978 the male line was launched.

Moving to Paris, opened for Ray the possibility of annual demonstrations of their collections in the very capital of fashion.

Features of the style of Ray Kawakubo

While most designers work with models according to the fashion standards accepted in the world, Ray gets rid of the symmetry. It uses a crumpled fabric of dark, inky black shades. Leaving the unfinished seams, crumpling various details and ruthlessly shredding matter, Kawakubo hides what the rest of the designers try to emphasize - the features and beauty of the female body. Her line of women's clothing is unpredictable, contradictory, goes against the generally accepted notions of style. Her collections are special, their own style. A clear love for deconstruction dictates the absence of sleeves and inverted pockets - this and much more you will find in her collections.
