Catholic churches in Moscow

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is considered to be the largest Catholic cathedral in the Russian Federation. The majestic temple in the Neo-Gothic style, designed by Bogdanovich-Dvorzhetsky, was built from 1901 to 1911. At first it was decided to build a Greek Catholic church in Moscow as a branch for the church of St. Peter and Paul, but since 1919 an independent parish has been formed here. In the years of Soviet power in the church there was a hostel, then the scientific research institute "Mosspetspromproekt" was located. In 1990 the mass service was resumed here, in 1996 the church was transferred to the Catholic Church. In this Catholic cathedral in Moscow, divine services are held in many languages, for example, Russian, Polish, French, English, Korean and even Latin. Annually in the church are organized festivals of Christian music on the organ. The temple is famous for cross vaults, lancet window apertures with stained-glass windows, bas-reliefs on the walls and an altar of dark green marble and a crucifix of 9 m high.

The history of the Catholic church in Moscow began in 1791: first a small church was built, consecrated in the name of the French King Louis IX Saint. Later, in 1833, on the site of the former building began the construction of a modern temple designed by the architect Gilyardi in the style of classicism. Even with the advent of Soviet power, the church was an active Catholic church in the capital. Now in the church of St. Louis of France, two parishes are served: the parish of St. Louis and the parish of St. Peter and Paul. The languages ​​of the mass are Russian, French and English. The temple is decorated outside with a colonnade, stained glass windows and lots of statues inside.
