Edema after tooth extraction

Removal of the tooth is a serious operation, therefore, swelling after it can be considered quite normal. During the procedure, soft gum tissue is cut. And while they do not heal, bleeding may occur, the appearance of painful sensations and swelling.

Causes of gingival edema after tooth extraction

Inflammation can be explained in different ways:

  1. Before each operation, the dentist should check whether the patient is allergic to the drug-anesthetic. If this step was missed, the edema may be formed as a result of an allergic reaction to anesthesia. Often accompanied by the phenomenon of shortness of breath and the appearance of a rash.
  2. It is not at all surprising to swell after the removal of a complex wisdom tooth. These rudiments can grow perpendicular to all other teeth, and their roots sometimes even cling to the roots of other teeth. Just in this case, the removal will not work. During the operation, it is necessary to open the mucosa and severely injure the gum.
  3. If the procedure is conducted in a cabinet with a dubious reputation, the swelling may be formed due to banal non-compliance with hygiene standards. If there is a problem in the infection, the gum in the wound site pulsates and becomes very hot. Body temperature also rises.
  4. In patients prone to increased blood pressure, edema after tooth extraction appears more often than usual. This is due to the individual characteristics of the body. In addition to puffiness, hypertensive patients may suffer from not stopping for several hours of bleeding.

When should I see a doctor?

At the end of the operation, dentists instruct about how much the edema keeps and how to remove it after tooth extraction. Therefore, leaving the room, patients immediately go to the pharmacy for solutions of furacilin, propolis, oak bark or Chlorophyllitis. Rinses with these drugs will reduce discomfort, remove unpleasant sensations.

It is normal if the puffiness does not drop to seven days, but sometimes the recovery may not go according to plan:

  1. Urgent counseling is needed if the swelling of the cheek does not appear immediately, but in a few days after tooth extraction.
  2. A painful throbbing pain, which even strong painkillers do not eliminate, is another reason for going to dentistry.
  3. Heat, accompanied by a general deterioration of health, is the main sign of organism intoxication.
  4. An excessively large tumor can indicate pulpitis . The disease develops if the doctor has not thoroughly cleaned the dental canals.
