Evolution of the handbag: 100 years in 2 minutes

Look how the handbag has changed for the last hundred years - it's just incredible!

A women's handbag is not just an accessory, it's a part of a woman's life. In it, she keeps everything that can only come in handy (and even what she will never need). The bag can tell a lot about its owner, for example, what style she prefers, how many things she holds in her and where she is heading now.

For the last hundred years, both fashion and women have changed, but one thing remains the same: women are still worried about what to wear and what bag to pick.

1916

So the purse looked a century ago, when everything was miniature, delicate and lace. Still influential are the influences of the Art Nouveau style, which prevailed from the end of the 19th century to the outbreak of the First World War, with its intricate plant motifs and the interweaving of images of predatory animals. The ladies have not yet given up corsets, but they are already starting to smoke, so there are matches in the purse.

1926

After 10 years, everything changes radically. The post-war sense of freedom, the cultural revolution, manifested in the development of cinematography, the emergence of jazz, cars and airplanes, had a huge impact on fashion. Hair and skirts became shorter, women refused corsets, and this could not but touch one of the main accessories. After the Paris exhibition in 1925 an era of art deco style sets in: the colors become brighter, the floral ornaments are replaced by geometric shapes. The sample handbag of 1926 is still a classic reticule, but with obvious Art Deco elements.

1936

The revolutionary 20th century is replaced by a more peaceful era with smooth silhouettes, long evening dresses and monochrome accessories of soft colors. Handbag is slightly larger, forms are easier, laces are out of fashion.

1946

With the end of the Second World War, the fashion industry, interrupting its full-fledged activities for a long seven years, resumed its work with renewed vigor. Handbag 1946 is an elegant, but already quite roomy bright clutch. Women continue to actively smoke, so a cigarette-case remains among the mandatory items inside the bag, and sunglasses appear from beginners.

1956

The fashionable silhouette of the 50's was decisively influenced by Christian Dior, who in 1947 presented his first collection "New Look": a dress with a lush skirt, sloping shoulders and an aspen waist. The concept was so different from all that was offered to women in the last half-century, that it immediately gained popularity and determined the fashionable direction of the next ten years. A considerable role was given to the main accessory: the bag again changed its shape, could look like a barrel with a handle of medium length.

1966

In the 60's, as in the 1920's, skirts again quickly shortened, turning into a "mini", dresses form an A-silhouette, fashion trousers come into fashion, hair and make-up change, and bags significantly increase in size. The simple forms and ornaments prevail, the handles of the bag are gradually lengthened.

1976

In the 1970s, the concept developed by designers in the previous decade continues to evolve. The mini changes to maxi, the pumps are replaced by massive platforms, but in general the commitment to simple shapes is preserved. The handbag does not undergo much change, it is basically all the same volume, retains the correct geometric shapes and can be of all colors of the rainbow.

1986

Aggressive style of the 80's can be seen in voluminous sleeves and shoulders, screaming make-up, contrasting colors: black, white, red, raspberry. The handbag somewhat decreases in size, it becomes flat, its silhouette, unlike clothes, softens, most often it is worn with a long strap on the shoulder.

1996

Handbag, offered by Gianni Versace in 1996, is black with a gold fittings and two handles - long and short, so that it can be worn as a reticule, or can be carried over your shoulder. The filling of the bag changes: the 80's audio cassette is squeezed out by the CD, and the anti-smoking movement is paying off - for the first time in many years there are no cigarettes in the purse; they are replaced by scented water.

2006

A bag of ten years ago is a voluminous barrel of warm neutral color, trimmed with metal fittings, with handles so long that the purse can be worn on the shoulder, but at the same time it was above the waist. There is an invariable attribute - a mobile phone.

2016

Today in vogue are quite capacious bags, with a frivolous fluffy pomponchikom for decoration. It will accommodate large headphones, a self-device for selfie, a mobile phone (well, as without it), and even something to eat.
