La Caridad

The Church of La Caridad (Our Lady-Philanthropist) is a temple in Comayagua , famous for its image of Saint Lucia, adorned with gold and silver. The statue has been preserved since the 16th century.

The construction of the church of La Caridad began at the end of the 16th century, in 1590, and the one that survived to this day, he acquired much later, in 1730. It was built for "newly converted Christians" - the Indians and Negroes living here.

Architecture of the church and its interior

The architectural style of La Caridad has in it the distinctive features of the Renaissance and Baroque styles. Twisted columns, curls and flower petals, vines, angel figurines - all this gives the church a festive look. The facade is decorated with a high bell tower. The arched door is crowned by a triangular pediment, in the center of which there is an inscription "1640".

The nave is made in the Mudejar style. The altar is separated from the nave by an arch, supported by four pairs of twisted columns, made of cedar wood. The choirs are supported by stone columns of the Tuscan order.

The central figure of the altar is the image of the Virgin Mary of the Philanthropist (or the Virgin Mary of Mercy). In addition to it, there are statues of Saint Lucia and St. John in the altar; the latter is traditionally used during the procession at Holy Week, as well as the statue of St. Magdalene. The statue of Jesus Burrita traditionally participates in the procession during Palm Sunday. It is designed in such a way that it is convenient to "sit down" on the donkey. Both the central and side altars are very nicely decorated with carvings.
