Abbey of Saint Nicholas

Despite its name, the abbey of St. Nicholas Abbey is known in Barbados, not as a religious but secular structure. It has not only a beautiful architecture, but also an amazing story, in which a place for legends was found.

What to see?

It turns out that in 1650 this building appeared as a private residence, which belonged to a certain Colonel Beringer. All the surrounding area was strewn with plantations with sugar cane. But the main thing here is not this, but the fact that 11 years after the erection of the building its owner was killed. Local residents believe that the corridors of St. Nicholas Abbey still haunts his undying soul. The truth is this or another fiction for attracting tourists, but every year hundreds of thousands of inquisitive people come here.

It is interesting that until now this majestic mansion remains not state, but private property, but one of its three floors is open to visitors. It is impossible not to mention the architecture of the abbey. Thus, curved pediments are a vivid example of Danish architecture, but the wide staircase is already Chinese. Going inside, the first thing that catches your eye is not even the old furniture, which is also beautiful, but the fireplaces with original coral finishes. Do not go unnoticed by the tall spiers of the carved stone and the corner chimneys.

Going on a tour, you will learn interesting facts from the life of the previous owners, as well as you will be shown a short film of 1934, allowing you to imagine how the abbey used to look. And not far from the mansion, in the souvenir shop, you can buy the most delicious and intoxicating rum, as well as various products from sugar plantations. There is also a café nearby where you can enjoy local delicacies . As for prices, an adult ticket costs 40 Barbados dollars, and a child ticket costs 20.
