Mountains of Indonesia

One of the features of Indonesia is that the country is located at the junction of two tectonic zones, which causes increased seismic activity on its territory. In Indonesia, there are many mountains and more than 500 volcanoes , almost half of which are active. The tops of many volcanoes are among the highest in the country, along with other peaks.

Mountain peaks of Indonesia

The list of the main mountains of Indonesia includes:

  1. Jaya (New Guinea). Sometimes it is called Punchak-Jaya. It is the highest mountain in Indonesia (4884 m). Its name in Indonesian means Victory Peak. It is located in the mountain range of Maoke in the province of Papua on the island of New Guinea. The Jaya mountain was discovered in 1623 by Jan Carstens, therefore in a number of guidebooks it appears as Pyramid of Karstens. The first ascent of the mountain was made in 1962.
  2. Gunung Bintan ( Bintan Island ). It is a landmark of the island of the same name. The mountain is very picturesque, because it is covered with jungle, between which streams flow and waterfalls run. Tourists can climb to its top. There is an observation deck. On the way, you should admire the local flora and fauna, swim in the refreshing streams of waterfalls.
  3. Gunung Katur (island of Bali). One of the highest peaks in Bali . Rising on it is quite complex and suitable for physically trained people. The route to the top takes about 2-3 hours. The path passes through the forest, from the height a wonderful panorama of the water surface of the lake and its surroundings opens.
  4. Mount Batukau (Bali Island). The Holy Mountain on the island of Bali. In the lower slopes is the temple of Luhur Batukau, which is an important place for numerous pilgrims. It is often called a "garden temple" because of growing in its yard hibiscus, ixors and champions. On the other three sides, the temple is surrounded by tropical forests belonging to nature conservation areas.
  5. Mount Penanjakan (Yava Island). From the observation platform of this peak, an amazing view of the surroundings of the city of Malanga and the entire eastern Java opens. Also from afar you can look at the powerful and formidable volcano Bromo . On Mount Penanjakan, many tourists love to meet the dawn, taking rare pictures and enjoying the beauty of the wild among the smoke-producing clubs of several surrounding volcanoes.
  6. Mount Klatakan (Bali Island ). It is located in the territory of the National Park Barat . To climb to the top of the Klatakan, you will have to travel a length of 5-6 hours. The road is not difficult, because it passes through the picturesque tropical jungle. During the walk you can admire ferns, rattan and fig trees, see black monkeys, flying foxes and rhino birds. Many representatives of local fauna are listed in the Red Book and are endemic on the island . Overnight in the park is prohibited for the safety of the tourists and wildlife of the reserve.
  7. Mount Bukit Barisan (o.Sumatra). The Bukit Barisan mountain chain stretches for 1,700 km on the island of Sumatra . Its name in translation means "a row of hills", which reflects reality. It includes several dozens of volcanoes, including more than 35 active ones, 3 national reserves of UNESCO world heritage, high-mountainous lakes (the most famous is Lake Toba in the caldera of an ancient volcano).

In addition to the above-mentioned peaks, there is also Klabat mountain in Indonesia (altitude is about 2 thousand meters), Mount Sumbing (height - 2507 m), the sacred mountain Kavi with bas-reliefs 7 m high and royal tombs and many others smaller and less famous.
