History of the temple of Artemis

By name it is not difficult to guess in which city the temple of Artemis is located. At a time when Ephesus was at the zenith of his glory, his inhabitants decided to build a truly majestic temple. At that time, the power and development of the city was under the auspices of Artemis, the goddess of the moon and patroness of all women.

This was not the first attempt to build the temple of the goddess Artemis in Ephesus. Several times the inhabitants tried to erect a temple, but their efforts were unsuccessful - the buildings were destroyed by earthquakes. That's why the residents decided not to spare money or strength to build it. The best architects, sculptors and artists were invited. The project was rare and quite expensive.

The place was chosen in such a way as to protect it from the forces of nature. The construction of the temple of the goddess Artemis lasted more than one year. After the construction, he was decorated for some time with new elements.

Later in 550 BC. Crown came to Asia Minor and partially destroyed the temple. But after the conquest of the land, he did not spare the funds to restore the building, which gave the temple a new life. After that, for 200 years nothing changed in the appearance of the structure and it pleased with its greatness as the inhabitants of Ephesus, and the entire ancient world at that time.

Unfortunately, even in those distant times there were people who tried to perpetuate their name due to loud and contradictory acts. The one who set fire to the temple of Artemis, really made the story remember his name. Herostratus is still called everyone who commits an act of vandalism. The inhabitants of the city were so shocked that they did not even immediately pick up a worthy punishment for the arsonist. It was decided to give it to oblivion and no one was allowed to mention the name of the barbarian. Unfortunately, this punishment did not give the expected results and today all the students know the name of this person.

Subsequently, residents decided to rebuild the building and use marble for this. According to some sources, Macedonian himself helped in the restoration and, thanks to his financial injections, the restored walls of the temple looked truly majestic. It took about a hundred years. It was this version of the restoration that later became the most successful. It stood until the 3rd century AD, until it was plundered by the Goths. During the Byzantine Empire, the temple was dismantled for the construction of other buildings and the remains eventually disappeared into the marshy slime.
