Tyrol-Cote Manor

If you decide to visit the capital of Barbados, Bridgetown and want to get acquainted with the local color, and not just sunbathing on the beach , be sure to plan a visit to the estate Tyrol-Kot. It is located in the vicinity of the city, so it is very convenient to get there. The estate is famous for being owned by Sir Grantley Adams (first prime minister of Barbados) and then to his son Tom, who were prominent politicians of the island.

What is a farmstead?

The house itself is surrounded by a miniature village in a historical style, at first glance you will immediately feel how it was transferred several centuries ago. The settlement, occupying 4 acres, consists of only six ancient cottages built in English style according to original designs. If you get tired of inspecting them, there is always the opportunity to do shopping: in Tyrol-Cat there are several small shops offering tourists various handicrafts made by local craftsmen.

In addition, the estate is open:

What to see?

A long winding road leads to the coral stone building. In the building you will find a collection of documents on the personal and political life of the Adams family, as well as household items that once belonged to the former owners of Tyrol-Kot. The originality of the house is given by a special Palladian architecture with eclectic additions in the tropical style: semicircular windows framed with red ornaments and reminiscent of the buildings of the Romanesque period, as well as statues that together with the palms are a real lawn decoration. The windows are surprisingly large in size, so that the tropical heat does not feel so much outside the manor. High ceilings fill a single-storey house with streams of light and air.

Inside the building a huge atmosphere is created by huge bookcases with rows of books in the style of the Regency, pictures of famous artists, furniture from natural dark wood: a double couch in a drawing room, a large dining table, sideboard and sideboards. Above the doors of the bedrooms are made small openings for greater coolness in the hot days.

The estate often hosts various cultural events: reading poetry and prose, exhibitions of local artists and craftsmen (blacksmiths, potters, etc.), where you can buy original souvenirs, theater productions. Do not forget that the last tour starts at 15.45.

How to get there?

As already mentioned, the estate is located in the vicinity of Bridgetown. The easiest way to get here is by taxi or a rented car on Spooners Hill. Before reaching Codrington Rd, on the left side you will see Tyrol-Kot.
