History of the museum
The George Washington House Museum is a yellow two-story mansion located on the edge of a cliff in the southern part of the Barbados capital. It offers stunning views of Carlisle Bay. This house museum is notable for the fact that here in 1751 George Washington stayed with his family. At that time, his stepbrother and guardian Lawrence was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Doctors advised to change the climate. The future first president of the United States decided to go to Barbados , as he knew that local residents are treating this disease with folk remedies. Upon arrival to the island, the family rented a mansion, which was built in 1719.
Officially George Washington House Museum was opened on January 13, 2007.
Exhibits of the museum
The George Washington House Museum is part of the historic complex called The Barbados Garrison Historic Area Tourist. Here you can find a lot of ancient artifacts, which testify to the key moments of life of the famous politician. The house-museum recreated a room in which 19-year-old George Washington used to live. Here you can see the following historical sites:
- The marble table, behind which the future president of America wrote his diary;
- bed, covered with mosquito netting;
- The basin in which the politician washed.
A tour of the George Washington House Museum begins with a film about the president's life. Further visitors are escorted to the pavilions dedicated to the following topics:
- medical equipment used at that time in Barbados for the treatment of various diseases;
- slavery on the island, which is evidenced by various thorns, terrible collars and shackles;
- archeology.
In the archaeological pavilion of the George Washington House Museum, you can see porcelain dishes and objects that were used by local residents, as well as weapons, buckles, ornaments and many other entertaining finds. The George Washington House Museum is surrounded by gardens. On its territory a souvenir shop, a cafe, a stable, a mill and even a bathhouse are open.

The George Washington House Museum is located in the southern part of Bridgetown . In order to visit it, you can use a rented car or public transport . If you have chosen public transport, then you should go to the Garrison stop.
