Vyšehrad in Prague

The ancient fortress of Vysehrad, built in the tenth century, today turned into a whole historical district of Prague. In the past, Vysehrad, along with the Prague Castle, was the center of the Czech state, divided by the Vltava River into two parts. Today Vysehrad Castle in Prague is a symbol of statehood, and for Czechs - a reason for pride. Guests of the capital of the Czech Republic never bypass this remarkable sight of Prague , enveloped in hundreds of legends.

Modern Vyšehrad

Vysehrad Fortress in Prague today is a fortification system, which includes the castle itself and fortifications built primarily from the 17th to the 18th century. It is possible to get inside its walls through the Leopoldovs or the Tabor Gate. They are located in the neighborhood. Immediately at the entrance of visitors is the Romanesque rotunda of St. Martin, erected in the times of Vratislav I. Initially, the building served as a resting place, and then housed a shelter for beggars, a police office, an arsenal and warehouses. At the same time, the architectural forms of the rotunda remained the same. Today, the old buildings can be inspected exclusively from the outside.

The cathedral of Peter and Paul, built by Vratislava I, also rises to this day in Vysehrad with the aim of detaching from the Prague diocese. The architecture of the building almost completely recreates the forms of the Roman Cathedral of the same name, which served as a model. Until 1885, when the architect Miksha gave it a modern look, the cathedral underwent several reconstructions and rebuildings. Under his leadership, the building acquired two Neo-Gothic towers. Currently, it serves as an art gallery.

The garden surrounding the cathedral of Peter and Paul deserves special attention. You can walk here for hours, enjoying the view of dozens of sculptures, monuments and ancient structures. This garden was defeated at the beginning of the last century, so it's not worth to be surprised at the seen dilapidated structures. It partially preserved the old bridge, fragments of the palace of kings, castle towers, baths. On the territory of the garden are the sculptures of Josef Myslbek, the famous column of the Devil, about which many legends are composed.

One of the attractions of Vyshhorod and Prague is the cemetery "Slavin" - an analogue of the Kremlin wall in Moscow. On the territory of this memorial pantheon, the legendary Czechs are buried. Artists, poets, statesmen, sculptors - more than 600 people, enriched their contribution to the culture of the state and the world.

An ancient casemate, which is part of the fortress, also deserves the attention of the guests. Visegrad casemate includes all the characteristic attributes: dark narrow corridors, hollowed out in the walls of a niche in which weapons were stored, small rooms for soldiers. However, these days the structure does not look so frightening anymore. Thanks to the efforts of the famous Czech engineer Křižík, electricity has appeared in the dungeons of the casemate. But tourists are allowed to inspect only some rooms of a multi-kilometer casemate.
