An ottoman with their own hands

Soft small seats, called puffs, are now a fashionable and popular detail of the interiors of apartments and private houses. This bench looks elegant and performs several functions at once.

Soft ottoman with own hands

In general, padded stools are divided into two types depending on the design features. There are skeleton pouffes, which are based on a base of hard material: wood, metal, plastic. These pouffes are often used in hallways and living rooms. They can be supplied with legs, which protect the upholstery material from mashing while in contact with the floor. The second type is frameless or soft puffs. They can simply be made with your own hands, having only the right amount of fabric, a suitable pattern and at least basic sewing skills. Soft ottomans are widely used in bedrooms, bathrooms and living rooms. They can perform the functions of a seat, a footrest near a chair or a small tea table. Their upper cover is often made removable so that it can be washed with soiling. Soft padded stools can have a different shape and filling, for example, such popular seat-bags .

We will consider how to sew a simple soft ottoman with your own hands. In our master class, it will not have a top cover, but if you wish, you can, by following the procedure outlined below, make a top for a puff of a simpler fabric, and then sew on the same pattern pouch with a zipper that can be removed. The advantage of this solution is also that you can make several different covers and change them from time to time, each time getting a new interior detail.

How to make a soft ottoman with your own hands?

Making a puffin with your own hands does not require special skills in sewing. And all you need is a pattern paper, a suitable cloth, scissors, a needle with threads or a sewing machine, a puff filler and a zipper.

So, we make an ottoman with our own hands:

  1. We cut out a circle from the paper (you can take a sheet of old wallpaper), which will correspond to the size of the upper and lower part of our future puff. You can already at this stage lay 1.5 cm as an allowance on the seams and cut a circle of the final diameter, or do it during the cutting of the fabric.
  2. We make patterns from fabric. We need two circles corresponding to the size of the one made of paper and a long rectangle whose height is equal to the height of the future puff plus 1.5 cm on each side to the allowance for the seams, and the length to the circumference of the circles and 1.5 cm to the seam . If you can not immediately cut out the whole part, you can cut two rectangles so that their total length is equal to the circumference of the circle and 1, 5 cm to the allowances on both sides.
  3. Sew the rectangles in the width, creating a single ribbon of the sidewall of the future puff.
  4. Now you need to take one of the round blanks and gently sweep the rectangular part along the circle to its edge, then this stitch can be sewn on a typewriter or securely sew the back with a suture manually.
  5. Do the same with the second circle. To make the seams not so noticeable, you can pre-trim the edge of each circle with a fringe that will hide the stitches and small flaws of sewing.
  6. We get a ready-made case for a soft pouffe with a hole on the side, where the non-sewn edges of the side piece are in contact. Through this hole we turn the cover on the front side and straighten it. You can pre-sew a zipper to the hole so that the cover can be changed, or if you make only the bottom cover for the puff, and the top is the other, then it can not be provided with a buckle. And after sewing manually sew.
  7. We use filler for furniture and soft toys. Through the left hole we stuff them our ottoman to the required degree of softness / elasticity. Close or sew up the hole.
  8. Our soft ottoman is ready.
