Bochorok

Sumatra is a natural protected area. There is a great variety of wildlife. This aspect attracts many tourists to the island. One of such attractive places is Bohorok - a rehabilitation center, which is a shelter for orangutans. It is located on Sumatra, in Bukit Lavang , one of the most interesting places on the island . Bukit Lavang is a small village on the outskirts of Gunung Läser National Park in northern Sumatra. It is located 90 km north-west of Medan on the banks of the river Bokhorok and on the edge of the rainforest.

The work of the rehabilitation center

The Bokhorok Rehabilitation Center was founded in 1973 by two Swiss women, Monica Borner and Regina Frey. They found orphaned orang-utans, taught them to survive in the natural environment, and instilled the necessary skills.

After a period of quarantine and upbringing, the orangutans are released back into the jungle. However, many animals continue to come to the center. Twice a day visitors have the opportunity to approach the semi-wild orangutans and feed them on a special platform.

The Sumatran orangutan is an endangered species. He became such because of poaching and loss of habitat. The rehabilitation center is an attempt to save and rescue animals that are rapidly dying out. During the Center's work more than 200 orangutans were released into the jungle.

The viewing point of Bochorok is a place where the visitor can closely observe the semi-wild orangutans, the process of their upbringing. The price of the issue is $ 1.5, and photography is $ 4.
