The Mosque of Al Akbar


The Al Akbar mosque is located on the island of Java , in the second most important city of Indonesia, Surabaya. In this part of the country Islam is the leading religion, and mosques are often found here. The newest one was opened by President Abdurrahman Wahid in 2000, and now it is the second largest after the main mosque of Jakarta Istiklal .

Features of the Great Mosque Al Akbar

Construction of the city's largest religious building began on the initiative of the mayor of Surabaya in 1995, but was quickly suspended due to the financial crisis of the late 90's. It resumed only in 1999, and by the end of 2000 the mosque was built. Its feature is not only a large area, but also a magnificent blue dome, surrounded by small canopy domes. The only minaret rises almost 100 m and is visible from different points of the city, today it is the highest construction of Surabaya. In addition, it is equipped with modern amplifying devices, thanks to which the singing of the muezzin is audible to the believers throughout the city.

Inside the mosque, Al Akbar is incredibly rich and beautiful. Huge spaces are decorated with golden paintings rising to the ceiling. On the marble floors, handmade carpets unfold during the hours of prayer. All this splendor is highlighted not only by the natural light from the windows, but also by internal projectors and point lighting systems.

Being inside the mosque, you can climb to the observation deck in the internal elevator. Once under the dome, you can admire the opening panorama: from above the city is visible as in the palm of your hand. Walking near the mosque in the evening, appreciate the magnificent exterior lighting that makes the white walls shining.
