Francis McDormand: "Anger can be controlled"

For the new film by Martin McDon "Three billboards on the border of Ebbing, Missouri" actress Francis McDormand prophesy another "Oscar". Who knows, perhaps, the stories about the American outback will indeed become fatal for the actress. After all, her first statuette of the American Film Academy McDormand received a role in "Fargo", an ambiguous comedy about oddballs from the province, the directors of the Coen brothers.

The picture of McDon turned out to be more frightening and work on the role from the very beginning promised many interesting twists and turns. Thinking through the image of her character Mildred, Francis was inspired by the characters of John Wayne:

"I used Wayne as a matrix. There is something in his gait. It became interesting to me, I read his entire biography and found out that with such a high growth, almost 2 meters, the size of his foot was very small, and it was necessary to maintain the balance. That's why such an interesting gait. He has his own image, he understood perfectly what kind of character a spectator needs. "

Rage and rage

McDormand tells the following about his heroine:

"I had many heroines-victims. But, playing each of these roles, I still tried to contribute something from myself. Mildred is a very interesting character. As soon as she decides to act, she immediately ceases to be a victim and everyone is sure - it can not be stopped. We really wanted her not to look apologetic, which is inherent in most screen heroines. After all, as the famous basketball coach Red Auerbach said: "You do not need to explain or apologize for any right action." Now many draw parallels between Marge from Fargo and Mildred, from myself I want to say - nothing in common. It's not just the characters, but also the time. A story about Marge from Fargo about the time when pregnant women continued to work almost until the onset of labor and there was no special uniform. And Mildred, she's not evil at all. In it, says the rage, raising it to the level of a fighter with injustice. The script writer conveys this so precisely that the film becomes the subject of a dispute between the society and this is important. Mildred lost a child, after such a person's life will never be the same. As for me, I have never been so furious. Yes, I'm angry, but it's different. I'm angry at many things, because I'm already 60, I live in America, and I get a lot of times. But, unlike rage, we can control anger. So they ask me, how do I feel about social networks? To express my feelings, I would use just the billboards and write: "End of Twitter!" Today we forgot how to call home phone or write ordinary letters, and it's sad and I get angry. I get angry when I see injustice. I've often experienced this in my life, and in the profession too. I was told that I do not fit, that I do not have the necessary qualities. I collected all the arguments and worked on this. And today, at 60, I can play the same heroine, with all its depth and emotions, different from everyone else. "

We are for equality

The actress said that many people consider her a heroine as a feminist, but she does not see such a message in Mildred:

"She's just looking for justice. Now many women feel the increased attention in connection with these sexual scandals, and it is right that many want more films with the main characters, but still it should be a good movie, without stereotypes like "Three billboards" or "Lady Bird". I'm 60, and I became a feminist at 15. And I see now the continuation of the sexual revolution that began in the 70's. We are for universal equality, for fair wages and for the equality of both sexes. "

Despite the frequent mention of her age, the actress admits that she does not even think of leaving the profession:

"I do not know how to do anything else. I am an excellent housewife, but even raising my son, I was almost always in the theater. You can live without work, but is this life? From here I can only be carried forward with my feet! "
