Living Bathroom Mat

The theme of natural gardening of living spaces is very actual today. If the owners of country houses with sites decide this issue does not amount to labor, then for residents of megacities, gardening is a problem. First, there are not so many places in standard apartments to make them pots with plants. Secondly, they need constant care. Thirdly, the plants arranged in the corners in pots are trite. But there is a way out!

Leading designers of the present day are working on the theme of landscaping not only lawns in front of the house, roofs, fences or walls, but also internal living space. They experiment with any surfaces where a living plant can be placed. Tables and chairs covered with grass, lawn sills, floors with vegetation islands are all not only very original and beautiful, but also useful for the health of the inhabitants of the house. If earlier these novelties were introduced only in rooms and kitchens, then today the turn came to the bathrooms.

Innovative solution

A few years ago, designer Nguyen La Chanh (Nguyen La Chanh) surprised the world with his extraordinary and at the same time simple solution. A Swiss woman came up with the idea of creating a living carpet from plants for the bathroom. These premises are in most cases unsuitable for keeping living plants, because the lighting here is artificial, there are no windows, and the humidity is quite high.

Madame Nguyen of seventy sprouts of moss created an original living mat, caring for which is extremely simple. It should not be watered, because the plants have enough moisture that they get thanks to the wet feet of a man who, after taking a bath, steps on the rug.

To create this rug, which immediately began to be considered a work of design art, the designer used three types of moss: forest, globular and imported from the islands of Oceania. Its basis is modern Plastazote material, that is, very high-density polyethylene foam. This material is characterized by high inertness and chemical neutrality. In it are made globular depressions, into which the shoots of moss are planted. No soil or substrate for the growth of plants is needed, and the boundaries of depressions naturally inhibit excessive growth.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantage of a living rug is its naturalness. Due to the natural properties of moss, the moisture level in the bathroom can be maintained at a normal level, as plants absorb excess moisture from the air. In this case, the room is filled with oxygen.

About how nice after the bath to step on a soft and fluffy surface, and do not have to say! Of course, this is incomparable with the sensations of cold tiles or dry wood. In addition, the carpet does not have any smell. There is another important advantage: moss has bactericidal properties. A living moss mat is an ideal solution for those who are forced to live in urban cities, away from nature.

Unfortunately, there are drawbacks to this design solution. Firstly, it is impossible to call the moss durable, and with the daily use of the rug the loss of attractive appearance and even the death of plants are inevitable. Secondly, its cost is high enough (the prototype cost the inventor 300 dollars). But, despite these nuances, Nguyen La Tien is in search of investors for the mass production of living rugs. Who knows, in the near future, such moss mats will replace traditional floor coverings for bathrooms ?
