Maritime Museum Wellington

The beach of Wellington City Harbor is decorated with a historic building, which once housed customs, now the Wellington Naval Museum has settled here.

How did it all start?

Museum history is interesting and begins in 1972, when it was founded as the Maritime Museum of Wellington Harbor. In 1989, the Museum was transferred to the City Council because of the global reorganization of all structures of Wellington.

Over time, the theme of the Wellington Maritime Museum has expanded so much that it has become a repository of not only exhibits related to the sea, but also others telling about the history and social policy of the New Zealand capital. Nowadays the museum exposition is divided into two parts, one of them is devoted to the Wellington Sea History, the second one is to the culture of the city and the country.

An interesting solution - themed halls

Exhibits of the Museum of the city of Wellington and the sea are divided into thematic exhibitions, decorated in multimedia galleries. We will tell in detail about each of them.

  1. "The collapse of Wahine in 1968". The hall narrates about the tragedy that befell the Wahine ferry, at the entrance to Wellington Harbor. Details of the crash are reflected in the film installation of director Gaileen Preston, broadcast in the gallery.
  2. "Those Fanganui and Tara." This exhibition is dedicated to the aborigines and the first European settlers who lived side by side and settled down the city harbor.
  3. "Wellington a century ago." Once in this gallery, you will plunge into the ordinary life of the capital of New Zealand, which people lived a hundred years ago. Tourists are invited to listen to an interesting story about Wellington, coming from an ancient telephone receiver.
  4. The Boer War. He narrates about the Anglo-Boer War of 1899 - 1902, one of which was New Zealand.
  5. By the Sea We Live. The gallery is dedicated to the maritime history of the city and country. Her exhibits tell of seafarers, their discoveries, their contribution to the development of Wellington.
  6. "A thousand years ago." In this exhibition hall visitors can watch a short film telling the Maori legends about the creation of local places.

In addition to the theme rooms in the Wellington Museum and the sea, there is the Wellington Harbor Council room, restored according to the memories of both residents and archival documents. It preserves the interior of the early XX century and the history of the life of Wellington and its inhabitants.
