Mavrovsky Lake

If you like nature in all its pristine cleanliness and incredible beauty landscapes, you will surely appreciate the charm of Mavrovsky Lake in Macedonia . It is in the mountains in the north-western part of the country at a sufficiently high altitude above sea level, so tourists will have to make some efforts to get to it.

The lake was formed relatively recently, in 1959, as a result of the construction of a powerful dam. It occupies the valley of Mavrovo, which is surrounded by the mountains of Bistra, Sar and Vlajnica. In this natural pond also runs a small river Radik. On its shores are four villages: Mavrovo, Levnovo, Nikiforovo, Mavrovi Anovi. Also in the summer in the area of the lake there is a ski center Tsare Lazarevski, open to all fans of winter sports.

What is remarkable about the body of water?

After visiting Lake Mavrovo, you can also visit the nearby National Park , which has the same name to get acquainted with the local flora and fauna. In addition, this artificial reservoir has the following features:

  1. The water here is quite cold - no higher than +20 degrees, so you can swim with comfort here only in the summer. Since September, the temperature has dropped so much that daredevils who decide to take water procedures risk running at least a cold. But to practice water sports here is a pleasure.
  2. The shores of the lake are covered with dense forests, which in combination with relative inaccessibility makes it an ideal place for lovers of silence and seclusion. Here grow beeches, birches and pines, and also live bears, chamois, lynx and about 140 species of birds.
  3. The original landmark near Mavrovsky Lake is the ancient half-flooded church of St. Nicholas. When the valley was flooded with water during the creation of an artificial reservoir, the temple was partially beneath it.
  4. The pond looks very picturesque in both sunny and cloudy weather, which makes it a real godsend for beginners and professional photographers.
  5. Relatively near the lake there are several hotels and restaurants, so you do not have to travel for tens of kilometers, if you decide to spend a few days here. Among the most popular hotels we will mention the ethno-house of Angelowski, the hotels of Alpin, Bistra, Fersped, Lodge, Macpetrol, Ying and others.
  6. In a pond, a special, especially tasty Macedonian trout is grown, but fishing is prohibited here.

How to get there?

To Mavrovo from Skopje - the capital of Macedonia - there are buses (the distance is 70 km). Further to the lake it is necessary to reach on foot, but it is rather close: in any local hotel you will prompt the way.
