Mount Nanos

Nanos - a mountain range in Slovenia , which has a length of about 12 km, and widths as high as 6 km, it is like an obstacle between the central regions of the country and the coastal region. Mount Nanos is a famous natural landmark, which tourists from all countries aspire to see.

Mount Nanos - description

Mount Nanos has the highest point about 1313 m and is called Dry Peak. Once in this area there was a medieval city that had a defensive wall as the Nanos mountain and a beautiful park called Ferrari. Walking along this park you can get closer to the observation point, from where the very mountain Nanos can be clearly seen. The southern and western slopes belong to a regional park with an area of about 20 km². Sometimes this mountain is compared with a sail, which does not allow to leave the warm air of the Adriatic.

Mount Nanos has a symbolic place in the history of coastal Slovenes. Here during the Second World War, there was a battle between the partisan organization TIGR and the Italian army, and it was a struggle for the western border between the two countries.

At the foot of this mountain lies the famous wine-growing valley of Slovenia. The Vipava Valley has a length of about 20 km and leads to the high-speed track. Here you can see the vineyards covered with picturesque slopes and an endless number of grape cellars.

Vipava is like an aerodynamic pipe, it is clamped by a chain of mountain beauty and an extensive plateau. So through this hole the wind blows constantly, this is one of the features of this area. Also here the temperature is a few degrees lower, but it became known that such "ventilation" very favorably affects the vineyards.

The Vipava valley is not straight, but winding, its slopes are flat, then very steep. Some elevations here reach about 400 m, but this polygon helps local people find suitable soil for their plants. There is a world producer such as Tilia, which has 10 hectares of vineyards. Its owners, the wife of Lemut, have the experience of making aged wine, such as Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Here is the winery Burja, which makes wines from different grape varieties according to old traditions.

Not many people live at the foot of the mountains, electricity was only provided to them in 2006. In addition to wine, cheese was produced in this area, but before that it was made from sheep's milk, and today it is made from cow's milk, since the number of sheep in this area has significantly decreased.

How to get there?

To get to Mount Nanos, you need to get to the city of Vipava. To it there are buses from other settlement of Slovenia - the city of Postojna .
