The Planetarium of Sir Thomas Brisbane

Perhaps the main decoration of the central part of the Australian city of Brisbane is its planetarium, discovered in 1978 and bearing the name of one of the greatest explorers of the southern sky - Sir Thomas Brisbane.

How did it all begin?

The history of the planetarium begins in the distant 1821, when Sir Brisbane and his disciples founded the astronomical observatory, which conducted observations of celestial bodies. The result of this work was the discovery of more than 7,000 stars and the publication of the Brisbane Star Catalog. Unfortunately, the local authorities did not provide a worthy financial support to an interesting idea of scientists, and in 1847 the observatory was closed. After 131 years, her work was resumed.

Planetarium today

Today, the Planetarium of Sir Thomas Brisbane is one of the largest scientific centers. It has modern equipment, through which the study of celestial bodies becomes accessible and interesting. For example, in the hall "Heavenly Dome" there is a digital projection system transmitting the image of the starry sky. Its radius is 12.5 meters, which makes the review realistic. In the observatory at the planetarium, you can see the Zeiss refractor, the Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, giant space shuttle models, photos from important scientific expeditions, the latest news from the Space Research Institute.

In addition, on the territory of the Planetarium, Sir Thomas Brisbane, a mini theater is opened, giving presentations on space themes. After the performance, spectators are allowed to visit the observatory and look at the starry sky in any of the telescopes presented. Workers of the planetarium conduct educational work and often lecture, observe the South sky with tourists and schoolchildren.

An excellent reminder of the visit to the site is a souvenir, bought in a cozy shop at a planetarium. Here you will find books, maps, models devoted to space and much more.

How to get there?

You can reach the sights by taking buses Nr 471, 598, 599 to Mt Coot-tha Rd at Botanic Gardens. After disembarkation from public transport it is necessary to walk about 500 meters. In addition, you can walk because the planetarium is in the center of the city and it is very easy to find.
