Faroe Islands - attractions

Unaffected by crowds of visitors, the Faroe Islands seem literally devoid of interesting places of interest. Naturally, they only seem, because here, on the territory forgotten by tourists, for many years a unique and very attractive region has formed, which every traveler who is worthy of himself must visit.

Natural attractions

Nature, without a doubt, is the main attraction of the Faroe Islands in Denmark . The harsh climate and remoteness from the world provided already and to the beautiful islands an atmosphere of loneliness and silence, so necessary for every person from time to time. Each of the eighteen tiny islands has its own characteristics and rare natural objects. For example, Fugle, the so-called "island of birds", became famous for the huge colonies of sea birds that consider the 450-meter and 620-meter high cliffs of the island as their own house. Another "bird island" is Michisness. It is here that seabirds migrate in the summer.

The most mountainous island of the Faroe archipelago is Kalsa. Just imagine: the west coast of the island - it's solid steep cliffs. By the way, one of the rocks near the settlements of Skarvanes has a very bizarre shape, for which it received its name Trtilkonufingur, literally a finger of the trollchikha.

On Strømø island, in addition to the capital, there are the highest (140 m) Fossa waterfall and the longest village in the country - Kollafiordur. The island itself is very picturesque, so it is recommended to explore as much as possible, at first glance, the usual places that are not very popular with tourists.

At the edge of the cliff on the Faroe Islands, on the island of Vagar, is located the beautiful Lake Sorvagsvatn , which seems to hang over the ocean.

Historical places of interest

Far from the world Faroe Islands are not distinguished by an abundance of historical sights. After the fire of 1673, there were very few ancient structures in Torshavn. The Monastery of Munskastov or the House of Monks, built in the beginning of the XV century, has survived. He survived thanks to its surrounding a solid stone wall. In the capital there is also the historical fortress of Skansin, erected in 1580. Local people speak of it as "the most peaceful fortress in the world". During the Second World War, the fortress was occupied by the British infantry.

The XII century also left its heritage in these parts in the form of the ruins of the cathedral of Magnus and the church of St. Olaf. They are located in the south of the island of Streimoy, in a small village with an intricate name Kirkjubur.

On the Faroe Islands there is a curious concert and exhibition hall, the roof of which is covered with peat. Norurlandahusey (House of Nordic countries) has a pretty presentable appearance, that's why many creative events take place there: performances, concerts, exhibitions, expositions. In the library of the building in the summer time "Faroe Evenings" are held, designed for guests of cold islands.

Interesting museums

The status of the main museum in these parts is rightly held by the Historical Museum of the Faroe Islands (Historical Museum / Foroya Fornminnissavn), which contains an incredible number of artifacts that show the history of the Faerus, beginning with the famous Viking Age and until the XIX century. Collections of the museum are really very interesting and in places even unusual, that's why every guest of the islands should visit this local abode of living history.

If you are fond of painting, there are several art galleries on the Faeroes: Ruth Smith Art Museum, Gallari Oyggin and National Art Gallery. Travelers also celebrate the tiny wax museum in Westman called the Vestmanna Saga Museum. Visitors say that some figures look so realistic that their appearance is even a little scary.
