The Grouthus Museum

A lot of unique historical buildings have survived in the city of Bruges , but among them, undoubtedly, the Gruthus Castle Museum or Gruuthusemuseum is located, which is located in an ancient building built during the late Middle Ages.

Exhibits of the museum

To date, the museum houses exhibits of medieval life and modern times. The interior and personal items of use are preserved here. So, for example, in the kitchen there is an authentic fireplace made in the 15th century and reached us in a state of inviolability. In addition, there is a set of antique dishes, and the main hall is decorated with wooden carved beams and an impressive chimney. All this speaks for the former wealth of the genus Gruthus.

In 1995, the city authorities decided to expand the museum's collection. Not only medieval monuments were purchased, but also masterpieces of local textile of the 17th century (fine wall carpets and laces), works of decorative and applied art of the 13th and 19th centuries: table silver, weapons, ceramics, gold jewelry and paintings, and sculptures 16-18 centuries.

The pride of the Gruuthusemuseum is the work of Kondrad Meith, performed in 1520, which represents the lifetime polychrome portrait of the Roman Emperor Charles the Fifth. The exposition of the mansion also includes beautifully preserved furniture of the 17-18th century and a collection of coins. In one room there is even a guillotine located in a mansion from the south of Flanders. It, to my great regret, was used for the purpose and past it usually all visitors pass quickly.

For guests of the Museum of Grthhus in Bruges is also interested in the study of old musical instruments. Connoisseurs of music, when they go into the holy of holies, freeze with excitement and dream of the opportunity to play on such wonderful exhibits. In the courtyard of the mansion is a small chapel, built in 1472. The museum regularly holds exhibitions with manuscripts of the first owner, which are called "Tapestries - masterpieces of Bruges" or "Love and devotion."
