Sharks in Turkey

Turkish beaches are one of the most popular holiday destinations among our compatriots. However, rumors about the attack of sharks in Turkey that have appeared in the last few years frighten potential tourists, make them think and even refuse to leave in this beautiful country. Who wants to check the presence of these dangerous marine inhabitants on their own skin and at the cost of their own lives? But if you are not timid and want to spend a rest there, it will not hurt to learn some information. We will talk about whether there are sharks in Turkey and how to exclude the possibility of meeting with them.

Do sharks live in Turkey?

In fact, seawater, adjacent to the coast of this hospitable country, is really home to bloodthirsty predators. Quite a different question, where are sharks found in Turkey. The fact is that these fish prefer the silence of the sea depths, that near the beach with vacationers does not happen at all. Therefore, it is extremely rare to meet sharks off the coast of Turkey. In addition, in the waters of this country, predators do not live year-round, but only migrate periodically in search of food, and not people at all.

If we talk about what sharks are found in Turkey, or rather in the waters adjacent to its territory, then the following species should be listed: sand sharks, tiger sharks, white sharks, reef sharks, hammerhead sharks, silk sharks, etc. The most dangerous species, white sharks, constantly inhabit the Mediterranean Sea. But they approach the coast very rarely and even less often attack people. Near the coast of Turkey there are no coral reefs - habitats of a large number of fish, and, naturally, they are not attractive to dangerous marine inhabitants.

Sand sharks living in the waters of the Aegean Sea also do not pose a threat to humans. They raid the shoals of herring-menhaden, flounder and luffar, and therefore regularly visit Bay of Bondjuk in the Gekova area. By the way, now there is a protected area where sand sharks are bred. The popular beaches of Marmaris and Bodrum are still safe.

However, vacationers on the beaches of the Mediterranean, who prefer to swim far from the coast, it is recommended to stay near the land. The fact is that the seabed of the sea drastically drifts to the depth, and therefore the greatest risk to encounter bloodthirsty fish is there.

In addition, from the sharks in Turkey, many beaches are protected by special nets, which do not allow dangerous fish to penetrate closer to the places of rest.

So, in general, Turkey is a safe place for tourists, unlike Egypt , where there are several attacks on vacationers.
