But not only geographical features attract travelers from all over the world: in addition to the unique nature and mild climate, in Cyprus a huge number of attractions , among which a special place is occupied by the tombs of Makronisos.

The oldest rock tombs

Cyprus Makronisos tombs are located near the most famous beach of Ayia Napa and belong to the Hellenistic and Roman period. This small burial consists of 19 tombs, sanctuaries and quarries carved right in the limestone rock. All small tombs are very similar to each other and represent small rooms with several benches. Steps lead down to each tomb, the entrance of which, as a rule, is covered by a limestone slab.

Unfortunately, the tombs of Makronisos in Cyprus became interesting to black archaeologists who plundered most of the burials. Official excavations began in 1989 and are still held, but, despite this, the entrance is open to all comers. During the excavations it was found that dead people were buried in clay sarcophagi and ceremonial bonfires. According to scientists, this place for burials was chosen for a reason: it was here for 5 centuries before the construction of the tombs that the icon of the Mother of God was found, and the tombs of Makronisos became known due to the monastery of the Holy Virgin Mary, which was built not far from these places in the 16th century.
