Museum of Viking ships

Denmark, from its very beginning, was firmly connected with the sea that feeds it, and with Vikings, whose descendants may still live on the islands. And it would be surprising if in modern Denmark a museum in honor of the glorious and strong warriors was not organized. Such as, for example, the Museum of Viking ships in the city of Roskilde .

What kind of museum?

The Viking Ship Museum is in Denmark , on the shores of Roskilde. This is the most popular place for visiting and spending time with adults and children. Historians and fans of northern husbands must come here to see firsthand the values that have reached our days.

It all started in 1962 when local fishermen discovered five ancient ships on the bottom of the fjord: two military, two commercial and one fishing vessel. The longest of them was 30 meters along the side. When it became clear that the find was about 1000 years, ships from the bottom were carefully raised, restored and a museum was created on their base. As it turned out, the ships were flooded specially to protect the bay from enemy attacks from the sea. Today the museum, in addition to the themes of the Viking times, combines findings and knowledge about the basics of navigation and the culture of shipbuilding from antiquity to the Middle Ages. There is a small cinema, where you can watch documentary films about the excavations of wrecks.

What is interesting about the Museum of Viking ships?

The hall of the ancient ships became the first of the museum treasures. Here in the future began to place all the artifacts found by underwater archaeologists. Also in the museum there was a collection of models of ships, maps, paintings, some items that have survived to our times - everything that is somehow connected with Odin's fans. By the way, in 1990 the collection of museum ships increased due to nine new exhibits found, and the largest ship is 36 meters long. This is the largest viking artifact for all time of searches.

In 1997, the Museum of Viking ships in Roskilde was expanded, and the so-called Museum Peninsula, where the shipyard and the archaeological workshop is located, was added to it. It also houses an anchor line of traditional Danish vessels. Masters from the shipyard in tandem with archaeologists create ships that can not be distinguished from those on which the Vikings themselves sailed. When creating each ship used recreated ancient tools and ancient technology, no progress.

Models of warships and simple cargoes were placed separately so that each of them could be approached in detail and examined. A base of archaeologists maintains a single archive of all the found objects of the era. By the way, for daredevils there is an opportunity to ride on one of the ancient ships on the outskirts of the city.
