Maritime Museum of Piran

Piran is located on the beach. Naturally, the life of local residents is associated with navigation and shipbuilding. The Maritime Museum of Piran is a museum of the history of maritime navigation in Slovenia . It was founded in 1954 as the City Museum of Piran and is located in a beautiful building - the Gabrielli de Castro Palace, located near the harbor.

Description of the museum

The Maritime Museum of Piran is located in a very beautiful three-story building, built in the classical style in the XIX century. Inside the room is beautifully decorated, it is decorated with parquet flooring, marble staircases, stucco molding on the ceiling and walls. The facade of the building faces the sea, which is important for the maritime museum.

In 1967 the museum received the name of Sergei Masher. He is a naval officer, a hero of Slovenia, who, during World War II, blew up his ship and died himself not to surrender to the enemy.

The museum has 3 expositions:

  1. Archaeological . It is located on the ground floor. The floor in the room is made of glass, and under it are objects obtained in archaeological expeditions from the seabed. For example, ancient amphorae. Visitors walk here in special slippers.
  2. The sea . This exposition is given the second floor. Here you can see the models of all kinds of ships and boats, weapons and clothing of sailors, maps and paintings of seascapes.
  3. Ethnological . Here are the instruments and objects of everyday life in salt mines. The collection of ethnological fishing is rich in tools and utensils for private and industrial activities, and various ways of processing fish are demonstrated.

The Maritime Museum of Piran also has a beautiful large library and a restoration department.

How to get there?

Regular buses run to Piran from the central bus station of Ljubljana . Once in Piran, you need to take the city bus and get to the station "Bernardin K". After leaving the transport go down to the street Formace and walk along the coast to Dantejeva ulica. It also goes along the coast, so the walk will bring only pleasure. In 10 minutes you will be at the intersection of Cankarjevo nabrezje and Vojkova ulica. There is a museum.
