Transport of Nepal

Nepal is a mountainous country, besides it is poor, so the transport connection here is not very well developed. Transport routes are located around Kathmandu , as well as near Mount Everest and Annapurna , as these places are visited by a large number of tourists.

Buses are usually crowded, and the roads are not very good, so to say that it's better to travel on a rented car than on municipal transport, with great stretch.

Air communication

Air transport of Nepal, perhaps, is better than other species. This is due to the fact that it is simply impossible to reach other parts of the country in another way. To understand what aviation is in the country, consider the following facts:

  1. There are 48 airports operating in the country, but not all of them operate permanently: some are closed during the rainy season.
  2. However, even in the dry season, landing in some of them causes nervous shivers in passengers. For example, Lukla - the air gate of Everest - is considered one of the most dangerous airports in the world, and some even give him unconditional primacy. The length of its runway is only 520 m, one end rests against a rock, and the other ends above a precipice. Sit here can only aircraft with short take-off and landing, such as, for example, Canadian airplanes DHC-6 Twin Otter and German Dornier 228. And this is not the only airport in the country, landing at the airport which can be performed only once and requires a considerable mastery of the pilot.
  3. Many aircraft operating on domestic flights are designed for 20-30 passengers, but often carry more people, despite the safety rules.
  4. The main air gate of Nepal is the airport 5 km from its capital - Kathmandu. Its full name is Kathmandu International Airport named after Tribhuvan , it is often called simply the airport of Tribhuvan. It is the only international airport. It is small, has only one runway and quite modern terminals. Tribhuvan serves both domestic flights and flights to Turkey, the Gulf countries, China, the Southeast Asian countries, India.

Buses

They can be called the main transport of Nepal; the routes cover mainly the Kathmandu valley, as well as the areas of Everest and Annapurna. Buses, like airplanes, carry passengers far more than there are seats. Therefore, tickets to them should be purchased in advance, although, of course, the ticket at the ticket office is more expensive than the driver.

Moving along the roads of the country, they are not fast, which is not surprising: in addition to the quality of roads, the quality of the rolling stock also hampers fast driving, as most buses have a very respectable age (in the suburbs buses of the 50-60s of the last century often travel). Traveling by bus, you can find yourself in a rather strange neighborhood: Nepalese in the cabin even carry livestock.

On intercity flights, newer cars are used, and on popular tourist destinations - almost modern ones, with air-conditioners, and sometimes with TVs, but travel to them is much more expensive.

Trains

The railway in Nepal is only one. Trains run between Jankapur and the Indian city of Jayanagar. The length of the railway line is less than 60 km. Foreigners crossing the border between Nepal and India by train have no right.

In 2015, the Chinese media reported that soon Nepal and China will also link the branch of the railway, which will be laid under Everest; to the border with Nepal, it should reach 2020.

Water transport

Shipping in Nepal is poorly developed. This is due to the fact that there are few navigable sections on its mountain rivers.

Trolleybuses

Trolleybus service in Nepal is only in the capital. Trolleybuses are old enough, they drive without observing the schedule. Travel in this type of transport is inexpensive.

Individual transport

In large cities and tourist centers there is a taxi. Compared to buses it is an expensive pleasure, but by European standards, trips are inexpensive. At night, the fare in a taxi grows 2 times. A more popular mode of travel is cycling: it's inexpensive and quite exotic, albeit slowly.

Rent of cars and bicycles

In Kathmandu, you can rent a car. The rental offices of international companies operate at the airport. Local rental companies also exist. There are many of them all over the city. Here you can rent a car with a driver or without a driver, but the latter option will cost more, and the deposit for the car will be much higher. To rent a car, you need to show international rights and a local license.

You can also rent a motorcycle (no more than $ 20 per day) or a bicycle (no more than $ 7.5 per day). To control the motorcycle, you must have the appropriate rights. The movement in the country is left-handed, and practically nobody observes the rules.
