World Water Day

World Water Day, whose date falls on March 22, celebrate the entire planet. In the opinion of the organizers, the main task of this day is to remind every inhabitant of the planet about the immense importance of water resources for maintaining life on Earth. As we know, man and all animal creatures can not exist without water. Without the availability of water resources, life on our planet would not have arisen.

History of the Day of Water

The idea of holding such a holiday was first voiced at the UN conference, which was devoted to the development and protection of the environment. This event occurred in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.

Already in 1993, the UN General Assembly adopted an official decision to hold on March 22 World Water Day, which will begin to remind all people on the planet about the importance of water for the continuation of life on Earth.

So, since 1993, the International Day of Water has been officially celebrated. The Environmental Protection Organization is beginning to appeal to all countries to pay more attention to the protection of water resources and to carry out specific work at the national level.

Water Day - Activities

The organization in its resolution recommends all countries on March 22 to carry out special activities aimed at the development and conservation of water resources. In addition, it was suggested every year to devote this holiday to a certain topic. So, the period from 2005 to 2015 was declared the "Water for Life" decade.

The Day of Water Day is held, first of all, to attract public attention to this issue. This makes it possible to involve a large number of countries in its decision and take appropriate measures to provide drinking water to residents of countries in need.

Every year, the United Nations selects a certain subdivision of its organization, which should monitor compliance with the rules for holding this holiday. Each year, they raise a new problem related to the pollution of water resources and call for its solution. However, the main objectives of the event remain unchanged, among which:

  1. Provide real assistance to countries experiencing a shortage of drinking water.
  2. Spread information on the importance of protecting water resources.
  3. To draw as many countries as possible on the official level to celebrate World Water Day.

Problems of water scarcity

The International Committee on Climate Change warns that in the future our planet expects a change in the distribution of precipitation. Climate contrasts will intensify - droughts and floods will become even more intense and frequent phenomena. All this will greatly complicate the regular supply of the planet with water.

At the moment, about 700 million people in 43 countries are experiencing water shortages. By 2025, more than 3 billion people will face this problem, due to the fact that water supplies continue to be depleted at a very rapid rate. All this is due to environmental pollution, high population growth rate, poor water management efficiency, lack of sustainable consumption patterns, low water efficiency and insufficient investment in infrastructure.

Due to water shortage, interstate conflicts have already arisen, primarily in the Near and Middle East (zones mainly with a desert climate, with a small amount of precipitation and a decreasing level of groundwater).

According to many scientists, all the problems of water shortage are reduced to its irrational use. The amount of government subsidies is so great that if you send this money to create water-saving technologies, many problems would have been solved long ago. The greatest progress in the development of economical systems for the use of water resources has been achieved in the West. Europe has long taken a course to save water.
