Zoo Mitchell


In the suburbs of Durban, the town of Morningside is Mitchell Park or Zoo Mitchell.

Its history begins in 1910, when an ostrich farm was opened. The idea turned out to be costly and unprofitable, therefore the organizers of the park decided to populate the farm territory not only with ostriches, but also with other animals. After a while, crocodiles, leopards, elephants, raccoons, kangaroos, lions, turtles, different kinds of birds became inhabitants of the Mitchell Zoo.

Elephant Nellie, a gifted zoo in 1928, is still considered one of the main pets ever living in the park. Nellie played the harmonica and chopped coconuts with powerful legs.

Nowadays, the number of animals that live in the Mitchell Zoo in Durban is huge and is represented by various birds and animals from different parts of the world.

After a fascinating walk and acquaintance with the animals, visitors to the zoo can relax in the Blue Zoo, which is famous for its delicious food and aromatic tea.
