Attractions of Eagle

One of the most interesting regional centers of Russia is the Eagle. It is a small but very beautiful city, standing on the river Oka, which divides it in half. An interesting difference between the Eagle and other river cities is the absence of a classical embankment: the steep banks of the Oka remain as picturesque as many years ago.

There are many sights in Orel. All of them are connected with the historical development of the city: ancient temples and churches, architectural monuments, modern landscape squares and, of course, numerous museums and theaters of the Eagle.

Architecture and sculpture

The historical center of Orel - Strelka, is named because the city was founded on the confluence of the rivers Orlik and Oka. Here, in honor of the 400th anniversary of the city, an obelisk was erected, and a letter to the descendants, which they will be able to read in 2066, was sealed up.

You can see the symbol of the city, the giant eagle , by the railway station. The bird is made of straw, and wire is used as a frame of this unusual sculpture. In this technique, several other constructions were made-a bear made of rods (near the church of Michael the Archangel) and a sailboat, located near the monument to the Orlovschina heroes of the Komsomol.

In Orel, there are several interesting monuments of temple architecture. Be sure to visit the Epiphany Cathedral , which is the most ancient stone structure of the city. There are also ancient miraculous icons.

The Assumption Monastery is now under reconstruction, as most of its buildings were destroyed during the war and in the subsequent Soviet years. Today, visitors to the monastery can see the surviving Trinity shrine and the chapel in honor of Prince Nevsky, erected in 2004.

Also in Orel, you can visit the existing Iberian Church , which has already been completely restored. Its building is near the railway station. It is noteworthy that this church was built at the expense of Oryol railway workers in memory of the coronation of Nicholas II. Among other architectural sites of the Eagle, one should distinguish the Akhtyrskaya (Nikitskaya) church , the rotunda chapel, the building of the national school, the governor's house and the bank built in the Russian-Byzantine style .

Museums and squares of the Eagle

Among all the cities of Russia, the Eagle is known as a city of museums - there are so many of them here. Local museums and exhibitions are devoted to a variety of topics. Almost all of them are located on the right bank of the Oka River, so you do not have to plan a complex route for visiting museums.

So, the most popular are the military-historical and regional studies of local lore, the museum of modern fine arts, as well as the museum houses of writers Bunin and Andreev, Turgenev and Leskov. No less interesting is the house museum of Rusanov, a polar explorer and geologist. In addition, you can visit the museum-diorama "Orel Offensive Operation".

It is also interesting to see the so-called literary monuments in Orel, which in itself is a sculptural masterpiece of the city. In Orel at one time lived and created many classics, and in honor of them in the city was recently broken so-called literary square . The sculptures of Nikolai Leskov, Athanasius Fet, Ivan Bunin and Ivan Turgenev very vividly convey the images of the great writers of the past.

Also in the city there is a picturesque square called "The Noble Nest" : according to legend, it was the manor that was here that Turgenev described in his story. It is impossible to pass by Turgenevskaya gazebo , located on the edge of the square.

And in the Zavodskoy district of the city there is a spacious park, where the squirrels and tiny birds live. Be sure to visit him, being in Orel with children.

In addition to Eagle, do not forget to visit the rest of the most beautiful cities in Russia .
