Auckland Museum

Museums are the visiting card of any city, and Oakland is no exception. However, there is only one institution of this type here. But this does not prevent the Oakland Museum from being the most popular place in the city. Every year, it is visited by at least half a million people, 2/3 of them are tourists.

How the museum was created

The date of his birth is 1852. The first exhibits were located in the house of an ordinary worker, where they were kept until 1869. In the same year they were transferred to Oakland University. Only in 1920 for the museum it was decided to build a separate building, which was done in 1929.

His appearance is extraordinarily attractive. The building is built in the best traditions of neoclassicism. Two extensions were made to it - in the 50-ies of the XX century (a large semicircular structure near the southern wing) and in 2006-2007, when the courtyard and a viewing platform under the copper dome appeared.

What can you see inside?

The Oakland Museum has a huge collection of exhibits on natural history and photographs. Here are artifacts from all the islands of the Pacific and Māori. The pride of the museum can be called a huge, 25 meter, mahogany canopy with a characteristic pattern and a Maori prayer house in full size.

The exposition of the museum can be divided into permanent and temporary. The first, it's central, tells about all the wars in which New Zealand participated from the beginning of the First World War. This exhibition is thematically tied to the War Memorial. In addition, there are always other exposures.

The Oakland Museum is the owner of the most complete skeleton of the tyrannosaurus (more than 90% of the ancient lizard is collected in natural size).

There is a museum near the business center of the city . It is surrounded by a beautiful garden, created according to all the rules of landscape design. If someone becomes bored inside, you can relax in the fresh air and at the same time get acquainted with the local flora and fauna.
