The park was founded in 1862 and occupies a very small area of 7.2 hectares (18 acres). There is a garden on top of a hill where in 1840 a flagstaff was installed. This is the signal system between the ships that went to the port of Philip, and Melbourne. For this reason, the name Flagstaff Gardens has also gone. I would also like to note that at that time it was the highest point in the city, from where a stunning view was opened.
The Flagstaff Gardens Park plays a huge social, historical, floristic and archaeological role in the history of Melbourne. From the south-east side it is surrounded by the Flagstaff railway station, and on the other - is the former Royal Mint, erected in 1869. The latter is a sample of perfectly preserved classical architecture, built in the state of Victoria during the so-called "gold rush". The facade of the building is decorated with twin columns and the personal coat of arms of the founder.
What is interesting about the park?
On the territory of the Flagstaff Gardens there are several broad lawns, with various flowers and trees planted on them. Here there are numerous animals and birds. In the northern part of the Flagstaff Gardens, mainly large eucalyptus trees grow, and in the south - deciduous trees. Pedestrian paths from the sun hide the sprawling crowns of large-leaved ficuses and elm trees, planted along the avenues. In different parts of the garden there are interesting sculptures and monuments, as well as fountains with drinking water, quenching the thirst of visitors in the summer heat.

From entertainment in the Flagstaff Gardens you can note the tennis courts and equipped playgrounds for handball and volleyball. There is also a children's playground, which was created one of the very first in Melbourne - in 1918. Here employees of the nearest offices often like to spend a lunch break. On weekends, whole families come to the garden for a picnic, because there are a lot of electric barbecues in the park that can be hired. At night in the garden of Flagstaff Gardens you can find a huge number of opossums scurrying between trees.
The park is a quiet and peaceful place, it is very beautiful at any time of the year: in the spring, when everything is blooming and smelling, or in the autumn, when the leaves in the trees acquire all kinds of colors. In 2004, the Flagstaff Gardens Park was listed on the National Heritage List not only of Victoria, but of all of Australia.
