Lake Buyan


Lake Buyan is the smallest among all the lakes on the island of Bali and enters along with Bratan and Tamblingan into the triad of the sacred reservoirs of the island. Today it is a very popular tourist place with a lot of observation platforms, souvenir shops, campsites, cottages, cafes and restaurants.

Lake Buyan is located on the island of Bali in Indonesia , 7 km to the north-east from Bedugul , in the crater of the ancient (now extinct) volcano Chatur, at an altitude of 1200 m above sea level.

History of occurrence

In the XIX century in this part of the island of Bali there was a strong eruption of the volcano Chatur, which led to the formation of the caldera and the appearance in this place of 3 lakes - Bratan, Buyan and Tamblingana. In our time, these are the most important sources of fresh water in Bali, so the locals are very honored, because the full yield of lakes depends on the harvest on their farms. And tourists are very fond of coming to the quiet and calm Lake Buyan, where there is a wonderful atmosphere of harmony with nature.

What interesting things can you see?

Lake Buyan in Bali is surrounded by virgin tropical forests, coffee plantations, carnations, tomatoes, as well as numerous agricultural lands of local residents. Balinese fish in the lake, and travelers are offered to ride on the water surface on a boat.

The greatest interest in Lake Buyan and in its environs is represented by:

  1. Temple of the goddess Devi Danu - the patroness of these places, which the Balinese pray for fertility, health and longevity. It is called the temple of Pura Gubug, located opposite the village of Asam Tamblingan.
  2. Lake Tumblingan. It is connected with Buyan by a small isthmus, on which there are several viewing platforms (with a panorama of both lakes) and coffee houses.
  3. Temple Pura Tahun , hiding between the fields, in the western part of Buyan.
  4. The village and the waterfall Munduk . A beautiful and powerful waterfall is located just 3 km from Lake Buyan, and 1 km from it is the village of the same name, where you can stay in one of the cottages or have lunch at the restaurant.

Along the road to the lake there are many cafes, souvenir shops, there are several places where the residents offer tourists fresh fruits, vegetables and greens from their gardens.

How to get there?

In order to get to the lake Buyan in Bali, it's better to go by car or motorbike. You can also use the services of tourist buses and join the group next to the lake.

The distance from the city ​​of Kuta to Lake Buyan is 85 km (about 3 hours by car), to Denpasar - 65 km (2 hours on the road), to Ubud - 60 km (1 hour 45 minutes). There is a road to the fourth lake in Bali - Batura (the distance to it from Bujan lake is 99 km, you can get there in 3-3.5 hours).

The most convenient way to get to the lake Buyan from Denpasar. At the exit of the city you need to turn onto the Jl road. RayaLukluk - Sempidi, then left on the Jl highway. RayaDenpasar - Gilimanuk and again left to the Gg. Walmiki. On it you move straight to Lake Bratan and further towards the village of Bedugul. After a further 2 km, you will find yourself at Lake Buyan. You can also drive a little further, turning to the right near the grocery market. After 7-8 km there will be a turn to the village of Munduk, where most of the tourists who visit Lake Bujan stay. From the villages of Asah Gobleg and Munduk you can only visit the observation platforms, but also go directly to the lake.
