Mosque of Mahmud

Switzerland is one of the countries on the territory of which many representatives of different nationalities live and, accordingly, of different religions. A significant part of the population of Switzerland are Muslims, for prayers and rituals of which throughout the country a lot of beautiful mosques are built. One such is the Mosque of Mahmud in Zurich .

History and architecture of the Mahmud Mosque in Zurich

The Mahmud Mosque is the first mosque built in Zurich . It is under the authority of the Ahmadis Muslim community. The date of the foundation of the mosque is 1962, then, on August 25, the first stone for the construction of the Mahmud Mosque in Zurich was laid by the daughter of the founder of the Ahmadiya Movement Amatul Hafiz Begum.

The towering minaret of the Mahmud Mosque serves as a symbol of the lighthouse, which indicates that anyone who wishes to pray can come here. It is noteworthy that the inhabitants of Zurich negatively reacted to the construction of Muslim shrines, considering them centers of Islamic aggression. So, in 2007, at the initiative of the Swiss People's Party in the country, a movement began to prohibit the construction of such facilities, which resulted in a referendum in November 2009, where the overwhelming majority of Zurich residents spoke out against the construction of new mosques, but it was already decided to leave the existing ones. It is worth noting that in the history of its existence the Mahmud Mosque has never become the center of religious and other conflicts.
