Winterthur Town Hall


The City of Winterthur is located in Switzerland in the canton of Zurich . The Town Hall is recognized as a masterpiece by architect Gottfried Semper and is an example of perfection in the style of architectural historicism. Initially, the building should serve as a mansion for the city government, but now there is a concert hall of the Winter Theater.

The monumental building of the Winterthur Town Hall was built four years from 1865 to 1869. according to the project of Gottfried Semper - the brightest representative of architecture of the eclectic period. The four-story structure is modeled after Roman temples with four Corinthian columns on the facade of untreated stone. At the level of the second floor leads a classic staircase, paved of sandstone. On the south side of the roof you can see the statue of the goddess of retribution and the patroness of Winterthur Nemesis, and on the north side - the statue of the goddess of military strategy and wisdom of Athena. At the corners of the pediment, two griffins are now located, which sit to the west and east, they accompany the goddesses.

Until 1934 the Winterthur Town Hall was also used as a school for boys and had a church hall for services. To date, the city archive, the city department of Winterthur, the mayor's office and the advisers of the finance department are located here, as well as regular concerts of the Musikkollegium Winterthur orchestra.

You can get to the Winterthur Town Hall by public transport on buses 1, 3, 5, 10, 14, 674, 676, N60, N61, N64, N68 to the Stadthaus Winterthur stop. The stop is right next to the town hall.
