Municipal Palace of Lima

Municipal Palace of Lima (Municipal Palace of Lima) is a bright yellow spot adorning the main square of the Peruvian capital - Plaza de Armas . Despite the beauty and pomposity, the building performs a serious function - it is the residence of the Government of Lima .

History of the palace

Like all Lima buildings belonging to the colonial era, the Municipal Palace has a very confusing history. The decision to build it was made in 1549 and for all time the architects Emilio Harth Terré, José Alvarez Calderón and Ricardo de Jaxa Malachowski worked on this project.

The first architect, Emilio Harth Terré, decided to build a neoclassical palace. For the construction, bricks and wood were used, which were brought directly from Spain. In 1746, a strong earthquake was registered in Peru , as a result of which some parts of the building were badly damaged, old wood rotted and the ceiling collapsed. The modern appearance of the Municipal Palace is the result of a long and painstaking restoration.

Features of the building

The Palace of the Municipal Palace of Lima is located between the two central streets of Lima - Jirón de la Unión and Portal de Escribanos. Its central part goes to the largest square of the capital - the Armory Square. Due to the fact that the Municipal Palace is the main government institution of the city, all holidays and festivities, including the New Year's celebration, are literally under its windows. In the evening, the palace is illuminated by a multitude of searchlights, which makes it even more majestic and beautiful. Not surprisingly, the square in front of it is a meeting place for tourists and local residents.

The building itself is characterized by a laconic rectangular shape. Its facades are decorated with carved balconies of the mirador, characteristic features of the Seville baroque. Due to the fact that the palace serves as the mayor's office, it is closed to visitors. It is known that the interior decoration is also striking in luxury. Here you can find marble tiles everywhere, exquisite ceilings and carved balusters.
