Nairobi Airport

Nairobi International Airport named after Jomo Kenyatta (English Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport) is rightfully considered the largest center of air traffic in Kenya . It carries out both freight and passenger transportation. This point of air travel is based 15 km southeast of the center of the country's capital and is the main transit hub of the most famous national airline Kenya Airways and the more modest local carrier Fly540.

Historical reference

Officially, the airport, which was then called Embakasi, was opened in 1958. After Kenya gained independence in 1964, it was renamed to Nairobi International Airport and modernized: a new passenger and first cargo terminals were built, buildings were erected for the police and fire services, and roads were reconstructed.

The airport was named after the first president and prime minister of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta. In terms of passenger turnover, this air port occupies the ninth place among all non-state airports in Africa.

What does the airport look like?

The first passenger terminal, located north of the runway, is supervised by the Air Force of Kenya and is often called the "Old Airport of Embakasi". The terminal, which is currently used for passenger transportation, is housed in a semi-circular building consisting of 3 sections: the first two are used for servicing international flights, and the third is designed for the departure and landing of local airline aircraft. A terminal for cargo transportation by air has been erected separately. In the structure there is only one runway, the length of which exceeds 4 km.

There are various shops in the terminal where you can buy perfumes, jewelry, cosmetics, clothes, cigarettes and traditional souvenirs from Kenya , a pharmacy and a medical center, a luggage office, travel agencies, cozy waiting rooms, a help desk. On the fifth floor there is a restaurant, in Block 3 - a snack bar, and in Block 2 - a pub. Travelers from other countries will be attracted by the possibility of shopping in duty-free shops Duty Free.

The airport is the most important point of transportation linking Nairobi to many major cities. Many Kenyan and international air carriers come here regularly. Among them are such famous leaders of air transportation as: African Express Airways, Kenya Airways, Daallo Airlines, Air Uganda, Air Arabia, Jubba Airways, Fly540, Egypt Air and many others.

How to get there?

It is not difficult to get from Nairobi to Jomo Kenyatta airport. There is a bus number 34, which stops a little to the left of the passenger terminal. The first traffic starts to go there at 7 am, the ticket will cost you 70 Kenyan shillings. In the afternoon the price drops to 40 shillings. From the capital to the point of air travel, the last bus leaves at 6 pm. On your own car, you should travel from the center of Nairobi to the southeast until you reach Northport Road, which will take you to the airport building.
