New Lighthouse of Gardskagaviti

A small but incredibly beautiful Iceland , located in Northern Europe, has already won the hearts of many travelers. This country attracts tourists from all over the world with its unique nature and original culture, as well as numerous historical and architectural sights . One of the most interesting places in this region is Gardaskagaviti's new lighthouse, which is located in the small town of Gardyur. Let's talk more about it.

What is interesting about the lighthouse?

The new lighthouse of Gardaskagaviti was designed and built in 1944 by the Icelandic engineer Axel Sveinsson. According to the idea, it was to replace the old lighthouse, which was much lower (11.4 m) and was too close to the sea. The locals decided not to demolish an important historical sight, therefore, today we can observe two beacons in these neighborhoods.

The structure is made in the best English traditions: a white concrete tower with a height of 28.6 meters of cylindrical shape is visible from a distance, even despite a rather modest appearance. However, not the exterior of the building attracts crowds of curious tourists here, but an amazing landscape that opens from the top of the highest lighthouse in Iceland.

In addition, everyone can have a snack in a cozy cafe of national cuisine and visit a small regional museum nearby, where unusual things, treasures and other finds raised from the ocean floor are stored.

How to get there?

Gardaskagaviti's new lighthouse is located in the northwestern part of the Reykjanes peninsula. From the capital of Iceland, it can be reached by car in 50 minutes. The distance between the cities is only 60 kilometers. In addition, from Reykjavik to Gardur daily there is a regular bus service, where you can also reach your destination.
