National Museum of Iceland

The museum building is a three-story complex, in addition to expositions devoted to different periods of history, there are cafes, a souvenir shop and the information desk. The museum opened its doors in 1863, when it collected all the exhibits, one way or another related to the history of Iceland - until that time they were all kept in museums in Denmark.

What can you see in the expositions?

The total number of expositions is more than 20 thousand copies. Among them there are many unique historical values, such as: items of national Icelandic clothing of antiquity, millennial, a statue of the pagan god Thor, a copy of the old-fashioned life-size fishing schooner and much more.

Near each exhibit is a plate on which in two languages ​​(Icelandic and English) a detailed description of the subject is presented.

In the museum building there is a scientific library - it has a lot of interesting materials on the history of Iceland, presents works on archeology and other scientific books, articles.

Separate attention deserves a collection of photos - at the moment there are more than four million pieces. Such a number of pictures allows you to save the history of Iceland in the best way!

The museum's working hours and the cost of visiting

Time of work depends on the pores of the year. So, from May 1 to September 15, the cultural institution opens its doors every day at 10:00 and closes at 17:00, and on Monday it's a day off.

In the remaining months, the museum operates from 11:00 to 17:00, except Monday. Also the museum is closed on days of major holidays: New Year, Christmas, Easter.

The ticket costs 1200 CZK. The student ticket provides a discount of 50%. Visitors who are under 18 years of age are free.

How to get there?

The National Museum of Iceland is located in the capital, an island state, the city of Reykjavik at Suðurgata, 41. Next to it is the public transport stop Ráðhúsið. To it there are routes of three buses: 11, 12, 15.

However, Reykjavik is a small city and it is easy to walk to the museum, acquainted with other sights of the capital at the same time.
