Outdoor thermometer

The first thing that each person does before leaving the house is watching the weather outside the window to be able to adequately dress himself and the child . Of course, you can trust the weather forecasters or people's signs, see how people are dressed on the street, or you can just hang a street thermometer and be always ready for any surprises of the weather.

Modern street thermometers are divided into several types: mechanical and electronic. Let's take a closer look at each of them.

Mechanical outdoor thermometers

Mechanical thermometers are bimetallic (arrow) and capillary (alcohol).

Capillary street thermometers are widely known, besides they are very cheap and very accurate. The operating principle of this thermometer is the same as that of a conventional medical mercury thermometer, but it does not contain mercury. The alcohol thermometer is a glass flask with a capillary that contains alcohol or other organic liquids colored in red. Thus, in the case of an increase in street temperature, the liquid in the thermometer expands, and when it decreases, it contracts.

Bimetallic street thermometer, reminiscent of a clock with an arrow, is less accurate than alcohol, but due to a large arrow it is clearly visible from afar. The action of this thermometer is based on the property of bimetals (two-layer material of dissimilar metals) to change and restore the shape under the influence of temperature.

Electronic street thermometers

An electronic outdoor thermometer is a thermometer with a digital LCD display, which can only be outdoor or combined.

A conventional electronic street thermometer, which is installed directly outside the window, has a translucent glass case, as well as large and contrasting figures. The peculiarity of this thermometer is that it stores and displays information about the minimum and maximum temperature. A digital street thermometer works from a solar battery of sufficient power, even for cloudy weather.

The combined thermometer is installed indoors and allows you to measure the temperature both in the room and outside the window. Some outdoor thermometers of this type come complete with a special remote sensor that transmits information about street temperature to the indoor unit via a cable installed under the window frame. In addition, electronic street thermometers can be wireless. They are installed in a room near the window or hung on the wall, and measure the street temperature due to the built-in radio module.

Electronic thermometers cost much more than mechanical ones, but they are more convenient for installation and operation.

How to choose a street thermometer for plastic windows?

Today, wooden windows are gradually disappearing into the past and are being mass replaced with plastic ones. If previously a street thermometer was nailed to a wooden window frame "tightly", now it is unlikely that someone will rise hand to hammer nails into a new plastic. Therefore, for plastic windows, modern street thermometers are used, which are attached to the window frame or directly to the glass on the Velcro or suction cups. However, with this method of installation, a temperature error of 5-7 degrees may occur. This can usually be observed in the winter as a result of the fact that the street thermometer will show the temperature of the air near the window, which passes some of the heat from the apartment. The second way of installation is on a slope with the help of self-tapping screws. In this case, the thermometer will show a more accurate temperature, but for its fastening you will need more time and effort.
