Getting to know the channel

The Pangalan canal is an important transport artery of the eastern coast for many small villages. The length of the canal is 654 km. Territorially, it starts a little south of the large city of Madagascar Tuamasin and stretches to Manakara. Thanks to the canal, coasters can enter the local waters for a distance of 480 km and deliver goods to hard-to-reach places and isolated villages, where even roads do not lead.

The grand opening of the channel took place in 1901. Construction work was carried out for a long time: it was necessary to connect a chain of lagoons and small lakes into one water system. In some places, the channel is very close to the coast of Madagascar, and with the Indian Ocean it is divided literally 50 meters of land.

In 2003, France issued a documentary about the construction and operation of the Pangalan Canal. Nowadays, on the canal, small excursions are carried out for everyone who wants to see the everyday life of the local population.

In the Pangalan canal, millions of fish and birds live, crocodiles swim in it, and the surrounding forests are inhabited by many relict animals.
