Attitude to the silver medal in school in our time is very ambiguous.
What does the silver medal give?
Previously, Russian schoolchildren who received a silver medal at the end of the school had the right to enter the university, including the budget , having passed the profiling exam for excellent grades.
With the introduction of the USE this privilege ceased to exist. At present, the enrollment of Russian schoolchildren in higher education institutions is associated only with the number of points received at the unified state exam. The real help from the silver medal on admission is only in the student's advantage over the other student without a medal with the same number of USE points.
Given the current state of affairs in Russian schools, getting a medal to a schoolboy does not give anything, except for the status of the medalist. But for the prestige of the school, teachers, the number of released medalists still matters. The school administration always strives to increase the number of silver and gold medalists.
In connection with this situation, even the cancellation of the delivery of gold and silver medals to schoolchildren was supposed, but after the discussion it was decided that the medalists in schools still have to be.
The situation in Ukrainian schools is a bit different. The silver medal is credited with 200 additional points, so necessary for admission, which contributed to the prestige of excellent study on the one hand, and the emergence of "lime" medalists - on the other.
The silver medal of the school graduate, like the gold medal, has been awarded for more than 50 years. Initially, the medals really consisted of real silver and real gold, but already in 1954, the production of medals began to use alloys, and after 1960 the name of the medals became purely symbolic. They are made mainly from the alloy of copper and nickel, and covered with a colorless varnish, which prevents the darkening of the metal. The medal is awarded for "Special success in teaching".
If you set a goal - to receive a silver medal in school, it would be nice to know under what conditions it is issued.
