The founder of the museum is Arthur Hazelius, who opened it in the second half of the XIX century. The project of the building was designed by the architect Isak Gustav Kleyson. Collection

The main value of the museum is a huge hall in which the sculpture of King Gustav Vasa is installed. The museum collection consists of exhibits acquired in different parts of the country. Mostly it is furniture, national clothes, various toys, kitchen utensils and much more. Later, things began to be donated to ordinary residents of Stockholm and its environs. New exhibits told about the life of citizens, their way of life.
